Xiaoning Liu-Scott, the founder of China Element, and a descendant of the ruling Manchu aristocracy of Qing Dynasty, has a passion for traditional Chinese culture and arts.
She has spent many years travelling around Europe and other parts of the world and
encountered widespread curiosity and desire for a better understanding of China
and "things Chinese". This has inspired her with a sense of purpose: To introduce to
the world the superior quality of the best in Chinese culture and arts, to promote a
better understanding in the west of this ancient civilization, and to help correct the
mistaken perception that has become attached to "Made in China".
Fired by her sense of mission, between 1992 and 2005, Xiao Ning travelled to many
regions of China, including the remote areas inhabited by ethnic minorities. She
visited scores of artists, original handcraft workshops and sought out the best
technical manufacturing facilities. From her excursions she selected the finest
elements of China that truly represent the richness of Chinese culture and arts today.
Her interaction with these talented peoples contributed to her own design inspiration
and heightened her love for Chinese culture and arts.
An ambition to introduce and inform the world about the real China through design
and artwork was becoming clear to her. Her long journey of more than ten years had
been geared towards one purpose: to build a unique Chinese brand to reflect all the
mysteries and aesthetic yearnings in her mind.
Realising a Dream
Xiao Ning has a dream that over the coming decade people from all over the world
will come to see China as a place rich in material, culture and arts, and possessing
previously undiscovered strengths in her range and depth of talent for design and
production of beautiful artifacts.
To realise this dream Xiao Ning sees that she must play her part by introducing to the
world unique products of China; pieces of artwork that are outstanding in concept,
quality and historical significance. Many of these fine pieces result from skills that
have been refined over thousands of years, and some are unique pieces or small "limited editions" whose aesthetic value is beyond measurement.
In 2002 she founded China Element UK Ltd after graduating with a Masters degree
from London College of Fashion. All her earlier efforts and works were a foundation
for the establishment of China Element, through which she would introduce to the
world the art, design ideas, talent, and way of life of the Chinese people.
There is the ever-present danger that such ideas and talent vanishes with the
passing of each generation and the inexorable march of mass manufacturing and
global markets. Xiao Ning is determined to help secure the survival and continued
development of these skills, by making the world aware of their importance and
bringing their appeal to the discerning 21st century individual. Indeed her mission
is to transform our understanding of"made in China" so that the phrase symbolizes
timelessness, elegance, superior quality, richness, traditional and at the same time
modern.
